Due to heavy rainfall, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) updated its weather warning on Monday morning. The rivers Labe in Vestřev and Jizera in Jablonec nad Jizerou have reached the third level of flood activity. There is also a warning for strong winds in place.
The highest warning level for rising water levels was in place on Monday morning in Jilemnice. Meteorologists have indicated that they will update the warnings as the situation develops throughout the day. Water managers are reporting increased water levels mainly in the north of the Czech Republic. In the mountainous areas of the Jizera Mountains, the Giant Mountains, and the Orlické Mountains, 40 to 70 millimeters of rainfall have been recorded in the past twenty-four hours, and in other areas, 15 to 25 millimeters.
The intense rainfall was evident during the evening and night. “Rainfall, high temperatures, and strong wind have caused rises in water levels and flows in most of the observed profiles,” said Jiří Petr, head of the Labe River Basin dispatching. However, he added that he does not expect a further significant rise in water due to the assumption that the rainfall will cease during the morning. “The rise in flows will move to the middle parts of the stream and subsequently to the Labe,” added Jiří Petr.
Emergency services in the Královéhradecký region reported that firefighters were dispatched only to a handful of incidents during the night. These usually involved technical assistance in removing trees from roads, pumping water, or monitoring streams, the levels of which are rising in the Trutnov region.
Strong winds are complicating the situation in traffic, even in the Olomoucký region. “Since morning, we have been dispatched to 30 interventions. These are mainly fallen trees on roads. Near Vysoké Žibřidovice, a passenger train ran into a tree. Two people were traveling in it, no one was injured. We cut down the tree, removed it from the track profile and the train continued,” said Lucie Balážová, a spokesperson for the regional firefighters on Monday morning.
