On August 1, 2024, Žluté lázně, one of Prague’s most popular destinations, saw an unprecedented influx of visitors. Known internationally, Žluté lázně was highlighted by CNN in 2013 as one of the top ten urban beaches in Europe, sharing the spotlight with renowned spots like Lido di Venezia in Venice and Amager Beach Park in Copenhagen.
When Prague’s temperatures soar to around thirty degrees Celsius, locals flock to places like Žluté lázně to cool off. On a scorching Wednesday, it seemed as though half of Prague decided to take a dip at this beloved spot. According to Hana Tietze, the spokesperson for Žluté lázně, such high attendance is not unusual during tropical weather.
Tietze explained that attendance at Žluté lázně is significantly influenced by the weather. While nice days draw crowds, particularly hot days attract masses of people. Events such as concerts, movie nights, and beach volleyball tournaments also contribute to higher visitor numbers. The venue ramps up its services to manage these crowds, including opening more refreshment stands and increasing staff.
On Wednesday, when entry fees were collected, the attendance count reached 2,500 people. Tietze noted that the numbers often fluctuate like a roller coaster, depending on the weather. For the month of July, Žluté lázně welcomed 22,000 visitors, demonstrating its popularity during the summer season.
The wide range of sports available at Žluté lázně also plays a role in attracting visitors. Unique games like Spikeball, Mölkky, Kanjam, and Cornhole draw sports enthusiasts. The first half of the summer has shown a significant interest in these activities, and the popularity of Sportpasses, which allow access to multiple sports at a lower cost, has surged.
For those seeking a quieter experience, the newly opened Park U Vody offers a serene alternative. Located between the Holešovice harbour and the Barikádníků bridge, this three-hectare park remains relatively unknown, providing a peaceful spot for visitors. Additionally, the Komořanské ponds and various other access points along the Vltava River offer swimming options, catering to different preferences.
