Prague authorities have begun removing unauthorized outdoor seating areas from the iconic Old Town Square in a decisive move to reclaim public space. The action commenced on Tuesday morning and targets restaurant terraces operating without proper permits.

The Technical Administration of Roads (TSK) initiated dismantling, with a significant portion of the structures removed by noon. The area surrounding the terraces was cordoned off, with local law enforcement overseeing the operation.

At the heart of this controversy is K.V.P. Gastro, the company operating terraces near the Old Town Hall and at the entrance of Melantrichova Street. The city hall terminated the firm’s lease agreement in June 2022, and it lacks the necessary permits from Prague 1 district for space occupation.

Karolína Šnejdarová, the spokesperson for Prague 1, explained that while these terraces had valid permits for special road use until December 31, 2023, the situation changed in 2024. Administrative proceedings were initiated to remove the unauthorized occupation, resulting in an order for terrace removal and concurrent penalty proceedings for unauthorized use.

Prague 1 authorities are seen as setting a precedent by removing these unauthorized terraces, potentially paving the way for addressing similar cases in the future. The district has also sought guidance from the Ministry of Transport.
