In a move that’s set to impact Prague’s traffic flow, the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic has announced a temporary closure of two key tunnels on the southern part of Prague’s outer ring road. The Lochkov and Cholupice tunnels will be inaccessible from noon on October 27 until midday on October 28, 2024, to conduct essential fire safety tests.
These tests, which are crucial for verifying the functionality of safety measures and control systems, were postponed to the latest possible date due to the extended repairs on the Barrandov Bridge. The closure is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions, particularly given the ongoing reconstruction work on the Barrandov Bridge.
To mitigate the impact, authorities have outlined several detour routes. These will direct traffic through the Southern Connection, Barrandov Bridge, K Barrandovu Street, and Strakonická Street from the southwest. However, drivers are being advised to plan their journeys to avoid these areas altogether if possible.
For those who must travel, checking real-time traffic information and using online navigation apps is strongly recommended. Truck drivers are urged to stick to the marked detour routes, though they should anticipate traffic complications.
In related developments, while restrictions on the Barrandov Bridge have eased, with two lanes now open for turns towards Barrandov and Zbraslav, the on-ramp from Strakonická to the Barrandov Bridge remains closed. Drivers can use a return ramp near Lihovar to access the bridge.
These temporary measures, while inconvenient, are vital for ensuring the safety and efficiency of Prague’s road infrastructure. Motorists are encouraged to stay informed and plan accordingly to minimize disruptions to their travel plans.
