Candidates of the tri-coalition Together, i.e., ODS, KDU-ČSL, and TOP 09, will run for seats in 19 of the 27 Senate districts.
Senate President Miloš Vystrčil of the ODS is defending his seat in Vysočina, while Tomáš Töpfer, director of the Vinohrady theatre, is running in Brno. Nominated by TOP 09, Jan Pirk, a cardiothoracic surgeon, is running for the Senate from Prague 10. Šárka Jelínková, the head of the KDU-ČSL club, is also running again for the Senate in Kroměříž.
“We will not deviate from our path. Together is not a marketing project that ended on the day the parliamentary elections were announced. Still, a long-term alliance based on friendship and mutual trust,” Prime Minister and ODS chief Petr Fiala said on Tuesday at the signing of a memorandum on joint action.
“At a time when populists and extremists are blocking every session of the House, the role of the Senate is even more important,” he noted.
“We are heading for victory in the Senate elections. We are doing this mainly for the citizens, who deserve predictable politics in these uncertain times and to be represented by the quality and decent people,” added Markéta Pekarová Adamová, chairwoman of the Chamber of Deputies and TOP 09. Fiala said that the coalition of ODS, KDU-ČSL, and TOP 09 should proceed in the presidential elections.
“We will present our candidate, but only after the holidays. First in September,” Fiala said. He again firmly rejected the idea that he could run for the Castle.
