Arctic Blast to Sweep Through Czech Republic: A Weekend of Winter in Spring

In a typical April weather twist, the Czech Republic is bracing for a dramatic temperature drop that will bring winter-like conditions back to the region. While Friday promises comfortable temperatures reaching up to 20°C (68°F), the weekend will usher in a stark reminder that spring isn’t fully settled in yet.

The transformation begins Saturday as Arctic air masses push into the region, causing temperatures to plummet dramatically. Initial morning temperatures of 8°C will give way to a mix of rain and snow showers, with mountainous areas expecting up to 10 centimeters of fresh snow. By evening, temperatures across the country will drop below freezing.

Sunday morning will see widespread frost with temperatures falling to -3°C (27°F), barely reaching 4°C (39°F) during the day. Strong winds will compound the winter-like conditions, potentially creating snow drifts in affected areas.

The cold spell poses a significant threat to flowering trees and crops. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute is expected to issue frost warnings for the vegetation period, a concerning development for fruit farmers who faced similar challenges last April when frost damaged apple, plum, pear, and apricot crops.

The chilly conditions will persist into next week, with Monday morning temperatures potentially dropping to -6°C (21°F). A gradual warming trend isn’t expected until the end of the following work week, when temperatures might finally return to a more spring-like 15°C (59°F).
