The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) has extended its weather warning to include not only icy conditions but also heavy snowfall expected to impact parts of the Czech Republic. The warning indicates that dangerous winter weather will continue to affect the region over the next few days, with particular concern for ice formation and significant snow accumulation in the east and northern mountains.
Ice formation, or ledovka, will primarily threaten southern Bohemia, Vysočina, and surrounding areas from Monday evening until Tuesday morning. Meteorologists warn of freezing rain causing thin layers of ice on roads and sidewalks, heightening the risk of traffic disruptions and personal injuries. As temperatures drop, this freezing precipitation is expected to transition into snow or rain mixed with snow.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, the ČHMÚ has issued a preliminary alert for potentially heavy snowfall in northern mountain regions and in the Olomouc, Moravian-Silesian, and Zlín regions. Snowfall could be substantial, with forecasts predicting 10 to 20 centimeters across these areas, and possibly up to 30 centimeters in windward mountain locations. Such snowfall would considerably impact travel and outdoor activities, prompting meteorologists to prepare a formal snow cover warning as more data becomes available.
This bout of wintry weather stems from a frontal boundary that will linger over Central Europe, bringing a hazardous mix of precipitation types. Aside from transportation complications, residents are advised to take extra care to avoid slips and falls, particularly in areas prone to ice.
Meteorologists urge those in affected areas to stay updated with the latest forecasts and exercise caution during their daily routines. Winter preparedness, including appropriate clothing, vehicle readiness, and awareness of weather developments, is essential as the region faces a challenging weather pattern in the coming days.
