The Czech animated movie “My Sun Mad” has received a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Animated Film category. The winners of each category will be announced on Sunday, January 9. The movie premiered in October and was directed by Michaela Pavlátová. It is also nominated for an Oscar.
My Sun Mad tells the story of a young Czech girl who marries her classmate Nazir in Afghanistan, Kabul. The film is based on the book Frišta by journalist and writer Petra Procházková. It will compete for the Golden Globe with the Danish film Escape and three films from Disney -Raya and the Dragon, Encanto, and Luca.
A few days ago, director Pavlátová returned from the United States, promoting her film as part of the Golden Globes campaign. She also participated in the mandatory pre-Oscars distribution launched by the film’s producers. “The foreign campaign of the movie is conducted through the promotion of Czech animation globally, which also includes raising awareness of the current events in Afghanistan,” says Martina Chvojka Reková on behalf of the film crew.
My Sun Mad has already won several awards, for example, the Jury Prize at the largest and most prestigious animation film festival in Annecy, France, or the main prize at the festival in Guadalajara, Mexico. Among the Czech actors, the film features the voices of Zuzana Stivínová, Hynek Čermák, and Ivan Trojan.
The director, designer, and animator Michaela Pavlátová is the head of the Animation Department at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU). The film school is located in Prague and is considered among the best in the world. Pavlátová’s animated films have been nominated for an Oscar in 1991 and 2012, and her short film “Repete” won the Golden Bear at Berlin in 1995.
