Czech Fog Blankets Lowlands, Sunshine Beckons from the Mountains

Early-week sunny spells in the Czech Republic give way to persistent fog and low clouds gripping most areas through the weekend and beyond. Inversion weather patterns trap haze in valleys while higher elevations enjoy clear skies and milder warmth. This shift follows recent record-breaking mild temperatures, promising above-average December days despite the gloom.

Thursday’s Front Ushers in Change

A cold front sweeps across from the west Thursday, trailed by high pressure ushering inversion conditions. Mornings start cloudy with scattered showers moving eastward, clearing by afternoon from the northwest—only for evening fog to settle widely. Daytime highs dip from recent peaks but stay above average at 6-11°C, with light variable winds.

Friday: Haze Dominates, Hills Clear

Low clouds and fog blanket the day Friday, with isolated drizzle possible underneath. Mountains and much of Moravskoslezský region (outside Ostrava) see lighter skies thanks to inversion lift. Expect morning lows of -1 to 3°C, afternoons reaching 3-7°C—up to 9°C in clear spots, around 7°C on peaks.

Saturday Mirrors the Pattern

Saturday echoes Friday’s inversion: widespread low cloud and fog in lowlands, occasional drizzle, but clear conditions crown the highest mountains. Moravskoslezský and Jeseníky areas from lower elevations likely stay mostly clear. Evening might bring light precipitation to western Bohemia from a weakening front; lows near 1°C, highs around 5°C, touching 9°C where sun breaks through.

Sunday Brings Light Rain

Weak rain chances peak Sunday morning over northern and northeastern Czechia, under mostly overcast skies that thin slightly by day. Fog lingers in spots as inversion holds. Lows average -1 to 3°C, daytime temperatures climb to 4-8°C.

Inversion Persists Next Week

The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute forecasts inversion renewal early next week, with low clouds, fog, and stray drizzle or freezing mist in sub-zero zones dominating lowlands. Mountains revel in mostly clear to partly cloudy views, rare clarity elsewhere. Mornings hover near 0°C, afternoons 0-5°C, up to 7°C under sun.
