The Czech Republic has just experienced what meteorologists believe to be the coldest night of this winter season, according to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI). With average temperatures plummeting to around minus 12 degrees Celsius, the frigid conditions have set a new benchmark for this winter.
In the early hours of Wednesday, the remote settlement of Jizerka in the Jablonec region, along with its surrounding plains, recorded temperatures dropping below minus 25 degrees Celsius. The cloudless sky across the country contributed to these extreme conditions, allowing temperatures to plunge well below freezing.
The cold spell has been persistent since the beginning of the week. Tuesday saw average minimum temperatures of around minus nine degrees Celsius, with the Jizerka station in the Jizera Mountains recording a bone-chilling minus 30.8 degrees Celsius.
Meteorologists forecast that Wednesday will remain clear, with afternoon temperatures ranging from minus three to plus two degrees Celsius. Looking ahead, warmer air is expected to arrive from the west at higher altitudes, creating an inversion layer. This weather pattern will lead to limited air mass mixing, with frost conditions persisting but gradually weakening towards the weekend.
