Delivery Companies Aim to Share Pickup Lockers and Open Them for Private Shipments

The landscape of package delivery in the Czech Republic is undergoing a significant transformation as major courier companies embrace the concept of shared infrastructure. Alza, already leading the way with over 2,600 pickup lockers across the country, has pioneered the sharing model that others are now eager to follow.

According to a recent ResponseNow survey, this move aligns perfectly with consumer preferences, with an overwhelming 82 percent of respondents expressing support for shared locker systems. The convenience factor is compelling – rather than navigating multiple apps and systems, customers could potentially use a single network for all their delivery needs.

“AlzaBoxes enable deliveries from all key carriers, offering cities an efficient alternative to having multiple boxes from different providers,” explains Alza spokesperson Eliška Čeřovská. “We believe our open network of AlzaBoxes helps balance customer convenience with maintaining the aesthetic quality of public spaces.”

The sharing trend is gaining momentum rapidly. Zásilkovna plans to open its network this year, while GLS is preparing to welcome smaller carriers to its network of over 1,100 lockers. Even DPD and PPL, who currently operate closed systems, see sharing as a future possibility.

Beyond just receiving packages, these lockers are evolving into multi-functional service points. Both Zásilkovna and Alza now offer services that allow customers to send packages through their locker networks. A recent survey revealed that 59 percent of customers are aware of this service, with 13 percent having already tried it.

The rapid adoption of pickup lockers reflects changing consumer preferences. According to Nielsen Admosphere, 72.2 percent of Czech e-shop customers have used pickup lockers, with 46.4 percent considering them their preferred delivery method. With approximately 14,000 lockers now operating across the Czech Republic, the infrastructure is primed for this collaborative approach that promises to enhance efficiency while reducing urban clutter.
