In a significant administrative challenge ahead, more than 666,000 Czech drivers will need to renew their driving licenses in 2025. This number marks a substantial increase from the current year’s figures, where approximately 433,000 licenses were due for renewal.
The Central Bohemian Region is expected to face the highest volume of renewals, with nearly 95,000 drivers requiring new licenses. Following closely behind are the South Moravian Region with over 74,000 renewals, and then the Moravian-Silesian Region and Prague. Notably, drivers over 61 years of age will constitute about one-third of all applicants.
To streamline the renewal process, drivers can apply for a new license up to three months before their current one expires. The process requires a valid ID and the current driver’s license. Applications can be submitted either in person at any municipal office with extended powers, regardless of the applicant’s permanent residence, or electronically through the Transport Portal.
As of January 1, 2024, a new regulation no longer requires drivers to carry their physical license while driving, though maintaining a valid license remains mandatory.
