Transferring solar-generated electricity from a cottage rooftop to a city apartment or from a community center’s power plant to a school is becoming increasingly popular in the Czech Republic. Since its launch last August, the electricity sharing program hit a record of over three thousand megawatt-hours in March 2025, equivalent to the annual consumption of a thousand households.
The volume of shared electricity doubled from February to March. According to the Electroenergetic Data Center, which manages user registrations, the number of sign-ups has significantly increased with more sunny days. The total number of registered users has now exceeded twenty thousand.
Energy communities, which can include up to a thousand members such as municipalities sharing with residents and entrepreneurs, have shown the most remarkable growth. Their numbers more than doubled between February and March, with fifteen communities already contracted with the data center and dozens more in preparation.
The program has attracted 465 apartment buildings, where community energy sharing proves most cost-effective as residents within the same building can share electricity at no additional cost. However, sharing from external buildings incurs transmission network fees and other charges, currently around 3.50 CZK per kilowatt-hour.
Since the program’s inception, participants have shared over 6,000 megawatt-hours of electricity, demonstrating the growing success of this innovative energy-sharing initiative in the Czech Republic.
