Environmentalists Drop Legal Challenge Against New Dam Project

The long-running battle over the construction of a dam in Nové Heřminovy, Bruntál region, appears to be reaching its conclusion. Environmental activists, who had previously opposed the water project alongside the former municipal leadership, have announced they won’t pursue legal action against the December construction decision.

Hnutí DUHA (Rainbow Movement), despite traditionally advocating for nature-friendly flood protection measures, has accepted the dam construction decision. Their spokesperson, Eva Pernicová, stated that while maintaining their reservations, they welcome steps to accelerate flood protection measures for residents.

The Ministry of Regional Development confirmed the territorial decision for the dam construction on December 19, 2024. The environmentalists’ decision not to file a lawsuit within the 30-day statutory period was influenced by their concern for local residents, who currently have no alternative flood protection options.

The project has gained momentum with Agriculture Minister Marek Výborný announcing an accelerated timeline. The complete project documentation is expected by July 2025, with construction beginning in October 2027. The dam should be operational by 2032.

While accepting the inevitable construction, environmental groups plan to monitor the project’s implementation to ensure it proceeds with maximum consideration for nature and the surrounding landscape. The dam will protect not only Krnov but also other municipalities in the Bruntál and Opava regions along the Opava River.
