Cold air is gradually retreating from Central Europe as warmer currents prepare to make their entrance next week. Winter will still have its final say with mountain snowfall expected, but the upcoming week promises the arrival of spring-like temperatures and longer daylight hours.
The weekend forecast remains chilly, with Saturday morning temperatures hovering around freezing point, dipping as low as -5°C in southwestern Bohemia. Scattered showers will be more frequent than Friday, bringing rain at lower elevations and mixed precipitation at higher altitudes. Sunday will follow with overcast skies and daytime highs between 5-7°C.
It appears as though “Lady Winter” is recognizing her impending departure, symbolically passing the meteorological baton to spring right on cue with the official meteorological start of the season on March 1st. Those waiting for the astronomical spring will need to hold out until March 20th.
Next week, warm southwestern air currents will begin flowing across the region. Preliminary estimates suggest that especially toward the end of the week, temperatures could reach averages of up to 15°C. Weather models offer slightly different predictions—ECMWF conservatively forecasts temperatures slightly above 10°C, while GFS eagerly anticipates readings around 15°C.
The coming days will feature mostly partly cloudy to cloudy skies with only occasional showers. Currently, models agree that Wednesday may bring more frequent precipitation to the eastern territories. While no significant temperature drop is anticipated in long-range forecasts, experience from previous years suggests winter may still have a final word. February 2024 was practically a spring month, but April frosts subsequently caused significant damage to crops. Fruit orchards, berries like strawberries and blueberries, and vineyards were among the hardest hit.
