The flu season is intensifying as new cases continue to surge across the nation. According to the latest report from the State Health Institute, the current rate stands at 1,499 cases per 100,000 people, marking a 6% increase from the previous week.
Children between 6-14 years old are particularly affected, with this age group experiencing an alarming 30% spike in respiratory infections, according to Jan Kynčl, head of the Department of Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases. The South Moravian region is currently the epicenter of the outbreak, with conditions rapidly deteriorating in the Karlovy Vary and Plzeň regions as well.
Laboratory tests confirm that both influenza A and B viruses are circulating in the population, with flu being the primary cause of respiratory illnesses. On a positive note, this year’s vaccine has proven to be well-matched to the circulating strains, offering substantial protection, particularly against severe cases.
Over 720,000 people have received their flu shots this season. Health officials advise that those still considering vaccination should take extra precautions against respiratory infections for two weeks following the shot, as this is the time needed for antibodies to develop.
Health authorities recommend wearing respirators when in contact with high-risk individuals, such as the elderly or those with multiple health conditions. They also emphasize the importance of basic preventive measures, including frequent hand washing and proper ventilation of indoor spaces.
