From Winter Coat to T-Shirt: Daily Temperature Swings Can Reach a Staggering 25°C

Imagine starting your day scraping frost off your car windshield, only to find yourself shedding layers by afternoon. This dramatic weather phenomenon is exactly what’s happening across parts of the Czech Republic, where temperature variations within a single day can be remarkably extreme.

At the Březník station in the Šumava region, temperatures plummeted to around -13°C in the morning, while forecasters expected spring-like temperatures above 10°C later in the day. This remarkable daily temperature amplitude – the difference between the lowest and highest temperatures within 24 hours – can reach up to 25°C.

These substantial temperature swings aren’t random occurrences. They’re influenced by specific geographical and meteorological conditions. Valleys are particularly prone to these dramatic changes, as cold air flows downward during the night and becomes trapped in areas with minimal wind. Clear skies and low humidity further amplify this effect.

While Březník represents an extreme case, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute reports that some regions might experience temperature variations of around 20°C during clear-sky conditions. Afternoon temperatures are reaching up to 15°C, with some areas in Silesia warming up to 17°C.
