As August draws close, the Czech Republic braces for an extended summer that could stretch well into autumn. Meteorologists are predicting a heatwave that will bring true summer weather, with temperatures soaring to 35°C (95°F) over the weekend and maintaining these levels in the coming days.
Despite the official start of meteorological autumn on September 1st, German weather experts assert that summer is far from over in Central Europe. Medium-term forecasts from the German Meteorological Service (DWD) suggest that summer temperatures could persist even beyond September 22nd, the autumnal equinox.
While temperatures above 30°C are rare in September, they are not unprecedented. Czech meteorologist Dagmar Honsová reminds us of recent examples, such as the tropical temperatures recorded in mid-September 2016, when Řež near Prague hit 32.3°C on September 13th.
The extended summer is expected to give way to a brief cooling period and rainy weather around mid-September as low pressure from the British Isles moves into Central Europe. However, temperatures are predicted to rise again afterward. German meteorologists are already discussing a “golden October,” anticipating pleasant temperatures to continue through the year’s tenth month.
For those planning autumn activities, this weather forecast brings good news. “No big jump into autumn awaits us,” says Honsová. “The beginning of September will still tempt us to the water. Mushroom pickers should also get their share,” she adds. Whether you want to extend your beach days or enjoy crisp autumn walks, the Czech Republic will offer ample opportunity for both in the coming weeks.
