A critical infrastructure update is underway as demolition crews tackle an aging bridge over the D11 highway, the main route connecting Prague to Hradec Králové. The operation has prompted a closure between the 1st and 8th kilometer marks, with traffic being redirected through marked detour routes.
The bridge, which has served since 1984 connecting Jirny and Zápy, had fallen into disrepair, necessitating its complete replacement. The Central Bohemian Region Road Administration made the decision to demolish the structure and construct a new one, with completion expected by the end of this year, according to spokesperson Petra Kučerová.
The demolition work, which began on Saturday evening, is scheduled to conclude by Sunday at 9 AM, when highway traffic will partially resume. By Sunday afternoon at 1 PM, two lanes in each direction will be operational.
Looking toward the future, the new bridge design incorporates provisions for the planned expansion of the D11 highway from four to six lanes. The modern structure will feature a single-span design without central pillars, as requested by the Road and Motorway Directorate.
The project represents a significant investment in the region’s infrastructure, with construction costs approaching 70 million Czech crowns.
