A remarkable transformation is underway in Prague as the former Vinohrady Water Tower, straddling districts 2 and 3, evolves into Hydropolis – a unique water education center. The extensive renovation project, which began in December 2024, is progressing according to schedule.
The innovative facility will feature interactive exhibits demonstrating the journey of water from tap to treatment, showcasing how clean drinking water reaches homes and gets purified after use. The complex will incorporate various water features and serve as a public space, making water education accessible and engaging.
The project encompasses two major construction phases: renovating the historic seven-story tower and building a new exhibition reservoir, alongside repairing the existing water tower that will continue to supply drinking water to the surrounding area. Project director Pavel Válek anticipates opening doors in spring 2027, though he acknowledges the complexities of renovating this historic structure.
The facility will house an educational center, café, conference venue, and exhibition space, crowned by an observation deck atop the tower. With a total investment of 300 million Czech crowns, the project represents a significant commitment to public education about water management and environmental sustainability.
Built in 1882, this technical cultural monument stands as a testament to Prague’s rich water management history, and its transformation ensures its continued relevance for future generations.
