True autumn weather is making its arrival in the Czech Republic, bringing overcast skies and temperatures that won’t exceed 20°C. Adding to the seasonal shift, some areas will experience dangerously strong winds, as warned by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) in their latest alert.
The cause of these powerful gusts is explained by meteorologists: “The northeastern airflow over our territory is intensifying due to the low-pressure system over the Alpine region and the high-pressure area over southern Scandinavia”. Weather models predict wind gusts reaching speeds of up to 90 km/h in mountainous regions on Thursday, September 25.
The strongest winds are expected in the northeast of the Czech Republic, where ČHMÚ has issued a yellow-level warning—the lowest on their scale—effective throughout Wednesday and ending Thursday at noon. This alert specifically covers mountain and foothill areas of the Hradec Králové region, much of the Olomouc region, and the Rýmařov area.
According to meteorologists, “We expect fresh northeastern winds, especially behind mountain ranges like the Orlické Mountains and Jeseníky, with gusts around 80 km/h and exceeding 90 km/h in mountainous areas until Thursday noon”. These conditions could create hazardous situations, particularly in elevated terrain.
Even regions not under official warning will experience considerable wind activity. The ČHMÚ forecast indicates fresh northeastern to eastern winds at speeds of 4 to 9 m/s, with gusts reaching approximately 15 m/s. Residents across the country should secure loose objects and exercise caution when outdoors, particularly in exposed areas.
