In a concerning revelation from the Czech Trade Inspection Authority’s latest annual investigation, almost half of the inspected retailers were found violating regulations on alcohol and tobacco sales to minors. The extensive operation, which included nearly 7,000 inspections, uncovered widespread non-compliance with consumer protection laws and age restriction regulations.
The investigation’s most alarming finding showed that of the 894 compliance checks involving underage participants, 429 retailers – approximately 45% – illegally sold alcohol to minors. Additionally, 117 cases of illegal tobacco product sales to underage customers were documented, including electronic cigarettes and nicotine pouches.
Authorities imposed 2,809 fines totaling over 26.5 million Czech crowns on violating retailers. The infractions weren’t limited to age-restricted sales; many businesses failed to properly display prices or provide mandatory consumer information.
In a particularly troubling discovery, inspectors identified 13 cases where the individuals selling alcohol and tobacco products were themselves under 18 years of age. The investigation involved collaboration between multiple agencies, including the Police, Customs Administration, and health authorities.
