The Czech capital is making significant strides in preserving its cultural heritage and fostering arts, with a substantial financial commitment announced this week. The city council has approved 84 applications for heritage preservation funding, allocating nearly 46.5 million Czech crowns to various projects.
Looking ahead to 2026, Prague has earmarked 420 million crowns for cultural initiatives. A special highlight of next year’s cultural calendar will be the commemoration of Václav Havel’s 90th birth anniversary, with dedicated funding for projects celebrating this milestone. The city will also support Prague’s representation at the Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany.
In the heritage preservation sector, the funding approval process has been notably selective, with 57 applications being declined out of 141 total submissions. The successful projects include 51 immovable heritage sites, 21 church properties, and twelve movable cultural monuments.
A standout project receiving support is the roof reconstruction of the Basilica of St. Peter and Paul at Vyšehrad. The city will contribute 2.5 million crowns toward the total project cost of 9 million. Another notable recipient is the Hlahol singing association, which will receive over a million crowns for renovations, including window replacements at their Masaryk Embankment building.
