Prague to Launch Tender for Motol Swimming Pool Renovation Despite Local Opposition

Magistrát hlavního města Prahy, Novinky

Prague’s historic Motol swimming pool is set for a controversial makeover, with city officials approving a 59.5 million crown reconstruction project despite significant local resistance. The natural swimming facility, long cherished as one of Prague’s cleanest and most popular spots, has served residents for decades as a recreational and sports venue.

While both locals and city officials agree that the technically outdated facility needs renovation, their visions drastically differ. The Prague magistrate plans to demolish existing structures to build a new two-story complex featuring a restaurant, sauna, and wellness center designed for year-round operation. Local residents, who gathered over 2,000 signatures in protest, argue that this “megalomaniac project” contradicts the site’s natural atmosphere.

Even Prague 5 district representatives express concerns. Council member Alena Janďourková suggests that the proposed building could better respect the surrounding area’s character while reducing both construction and operational costs. However, City Councilor Jana Komrsková maintains that a two-story structure is essential for year-round operations.

Some concessions were made to appease local concerns, including improved entrance design, additional tree planting, a green roof, and relocating the building further from the water. Construction is scheduled to begin this year, with the new facility set to open in spring 2026.
