This year’s most famous Christmas tree—the spruce that has grown for decades in Lesná near Jiřetín pod Jedlovou—has arrived in Prague to become the centerpiece of Staroměstské náměstí (Old Town Square). The enormous tree was carefully positioned in the early hours of Tuesday morning and is now awaiting its grand illumination on the evening of Saturday, coinciding with the opening of the Advent markets.

In the coming days, hundreds of decorations will be placed on the tree alongside an astonishing 8.5 kilometers of LED lighting to create an enchanting snowfall effect. This spectacular lighting display will bring magical atmosphere to the heart of Prague’s historic square throughout the festive season.

Each year, this towering spruce takes center stage as a symbol of the Czech holiday spirit. This year’s tree is expected to draw huge crowds attracted by the upcoming Christmas markets, which run from November 29, 2025, through January 6, 2026. The markets feature colorful stalls filled with traditional Czech crafts, festive treats, and concerts accompanied by the glow of the tree’s lights.

The traditional lighting ceremony is scheduled for Saturday evening, marking the official start of the Christmas festivities at Old Town Square. Visitors and locals alike will gather to watch the tree illuminate, a moment eagerly anticipated every year in Prague’s cultural calendar.

Getting to this magical event is easy, thanks to close tram stops like Staroměstská and nearby metro lines, making it accessible for everyone seeking a festive experience at Prague’s iconic square.
