Rainy Weather Boosts Water Reserves in Moravia, Czechia Still Faces Shortages in Bohemia

The past week has brought substantial rainfall across the Czech Republic, providing much-needed relief to the drought-stricken eastern regions. Moravia and Silesia have benefited from persistent rain, restoring river flows and groundwater reserves to normal levels. However, the situation in Bohemia remains concerning, with significant regional variations due to localized precipitation patterns.

According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), the country received an average of 32mm of rainfall between July 21-27, 2025. The distribution was notably uneven, with Bohemia recording only 24mm while Moravia received a generous 45mm – representing 136% and 303% of normal levels for this period, respectively.

ČHMÚ hydrologist Martin Pecha explains, “I would divide it into two halves. Areas in the Jeseníky Mountains, Beskids, and elsewhere in Moravia have replenished their rainfall deficit thanks to several precipitation episodes over the past month. But in the Highlands and most of Bohemia, we’re seeing only scattered showers, insufficient to restore the water reserves depleted since spring and winter.”

The contrast is striking when examining water resources across the country. Rivers in Moravia currently show above-average flow rates, while those in Bohemia and the Highlands remain below normal levels. Similarly, shallow groundwater wells in Moravia have returned to normal, but those in Bohemia range from slightly to severely below normal, with some locations experiencing exceptional deficits.

Looking ahead, forecasts suggest the drought situation could gradually improve in the coming weeks. The Intersucho monitoring service predicts continued rainy weather, and with temperatures expected to remain moderate – even dropping below 10°C in the mornings – less water will evaporate from the landscape. Sunday may bring heavier rainfall, though primarily to Moravia again. The long-term outlook appears favorable for drought mitigation, with no heat waves anticipated in the near future.
