Severe Thunderstorms to Strike Czech Republic Again, Meteorologists Warn

The Czech Republic is bracing for another round of powerful thunderstorms, with meteorologists from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) warning of significant storm potential throughout Thursday. The alert primarily targets the eastern half of the country, marking a shift from Wednesday’s weather pattern that affected the western regions.

According to forecasting models, the first storm cells will begin forming around 5 PM, creating a band stretching from South Bohemia through the Vysočina region to the Jeseníky mountains. These storms are expected to intensify as they move eastward, eventually merging into a larger storm complex that will impact much of Moravia and Silesia.

The weather warning, in effect from 4 PM until midnight, covers several regions including eastern Vysočina, South Moravia, Olomouc, Zlín, and Moravia-Silesia. A lower-level alert has been issued for parts of the Pardubice region and the edge of South Bohemia.

Meteorologists are particularly concerned about rapid water runoff, the risk of isolated supercell development, hail up to 5 centimeters in diameter, and strong wind gusts. However, they note that most critical storm parameters will be less severe compared to Wednesday’s weather events.

The weekend outlook remains unstable, with thunderstorms expected to persist through Sunday. Friday will see storm development mainly in Bohemia, while Saturday will bring a new cold front from the northwest. By Sunday, the weather will cool down with occasional showers, and thunderstorm activity will significantly decrease. Sunny conditions are expected to return by Monday.
