Following Thursday’s storms that hit Moravia, meteorologists from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) have issued a warning for severe thunderstorms expected to impact Bohemia during Friday and Saturday afternoons.
“Local thunderstorms will form on Friday afternoon and evening, particularly in northern, western, and southwestern Bohemia. These storms could be severe, accompanied by torrential rain with accumulations around 40mm,” warns the ČHMÚ. The warning is in effect from 11 AM to 10 PM, though storms are expected to weaken in the evening.
Friday’s alert specifically applies to the Karlovy Vary, Plzeň, Ústí nad Labem, and Liberec regions, as well as western parts of South Bohemia and Central Bohemia, and the Krkonoše Mountains area in the Hradec Králové region. Officials have highlighted particular concern for the Krkonoše, Jizerské, and Lužické mountain areas, where saturated soil from previous rainfall increases the risk of local flooding and potential flash floods.
The severe weather pattern will continue into Saturday with warnings again active from 11 AM to 10 PM. Saturday’s alert covers the same territories as Friday’s but extends to include the entire Central Bohemia and South Bohemia regions, plus the western part of the Vysočina region.
Both days’ storms are expected to be localized in nature, with heavy rainfall presenting the primary hazard. Meteorologists caution that slow-moving thunderstorms could produce even higher local precipitation totals, potentially triggering flash floods before weakening again in the evening hours.
