Temperature Records Shattered: Two Locations Record Absolute September Maximum

The Czech Republic just experienced what meteorologists call a “tropical day,” with temperatures soaring above 30 degrees Celsius (86°F). Weather records for September 20th were broken at 23 of the country’s 170 meteorological stations that have been operating for at least thirty years. Most notably, high-altitude stations Horská Kvilda in the Klatovy district and Kvilda-Perla in the Prachatice district recorded their absolute highest September temperatures ever, according to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ).

The highest temperature was measured in České Budějovice-Rožnov, where thermometers registered a sweltering 32.2°C (90°F). Other locations also saw impressive readings, with Český Krumlov-Srnín reaching 31.1°C (88°F) and Javorník in the Jeseník region recording a new maximum of 30.8°C (87.4°F).

Even mountain regions experienced unusual warmth, particularly in the Šumava mountains. “What’s remarkable is that even in this later part of September, monthly records couldn’t withstand the heat,” noted meteorologists. Horská Kvilda registered 28.9°C while Kvilda-Perla recorded 28.8°C. Both stations are situated more than 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level, with their previous monthly records dating back to September 1, 2015.

The tropical temperatures extended to other locations as well, with readings above 30°C recorded at Pardubice Airport, in Domažlice, and in Neumětely in the Beroun district, though these stations didn’t break their previous records.

Sunday is expected to remain very warm with mostly clear or partly cloudy skies. However, cloud cover will increase from the west and northwest of the Czech Republic by evening, bringing scattered showers and possible thunderstorms. Wind will also intensify in western regions.

A significant cooling trend will begin at the start of next week, with afternoon temperatures likely failing to reach even 20°C (68°F) by midweek. The forecast calls for overcast conditions with showers, rain, and occasional thunderstorms.
