Train Disruption at Prague’s Smichov Station: Infrastructure Incident Leads to Major Service Changes

Jan Handrejch

A Monday morning infrastructure incident at Prague’s Smichov station caused significant disruptions to the city’s rail network, forcing trains to operate on alternative routes. The incident began when construction equipment made contact with the overhead power lines, initially affecting only electric trains.

Following a thorough inspection, officials discovered damage to the overhead traction portal, necessitating a complete suspension of services through the station. Railway authorities implemented an emergency routing plan, directing all services bound for Beroun and Plzeň through an alternative route via Krč and the Braník Bridge.

The incident comes amid major reconstruction works at Smichov station, which is undergoing a comprehensive transformation into a modern transport hub. The development is part of a larger urban renewal project that includes the construction of a new neighborhood in the vicinity.

In an unexpected turn of events, the day’s transportation challenges weren’t limited to infrastructure issues. Later that afternoon, train services faced another brief interruption between Dobřichovice and Řevnice when domestic animals wandered onto the tracks.
