Unemployment Slightly Decreases in June as Seasonal Jobs Boost Employment

The Czech Republic saw a modest decline in unemployment numbers at the end of June, with 315,465 people registered as jobless – 595 fewer than in May. This marks the fourth consecutive month of declining unemployment figures, primarily driven by seasonal employment opportunities in agriculture and tourism. Despite this positive trend, labor market analysts suggest the overall situation remains stagnant. Year-on-year comparison reveals an increase of 42,781 unemployed individuals compared to June 2024, while the unemployment rate holds steady at 4.2 percent.

“Statistics confirm that unemployment remains relatively stable despite the integration of seasonal workers, while the number of job vacancies continues to grow,” explained Daniel Krištof, Director General of the Labor Office. The number of available positions increased by nearly 2,300 month-on-month, reaching almost 98,700 vacancies.

Regional disparities persist across the country, with the Ústí nad Labem Region recording the highest unemployment rate at 6.5 percent, followed by the Moravian-Silesian Region at 6 percent. Prague maintains the lowest rate at 3.2 percent, though it experienced a slight increase recently. Job availability continues to be concentrated in urban centers, with Prague and the Central Bohemian Region together accounting for nearly half of all positions advertised through the Labor Office.

Summer months typically bring a mild revival in job offerings, particularly in logistics, hospitality, and construction sectors. However, employers remain cautious about economic prospects, increasingly offering part-time positions and temporary contracts rather than permanent roles. This indicates that while businesses are responding to seasonal demand, they harbor uncertainty about future economic developments.

The highest unemployment rates at the district level were recorded in Most (9.4 percent), Karviná (9 percent), Chomutov (7.4 percent), and Bruntál (7.1 percent). Meanwhile, districts such as Prague-East, Prague-West, Rychnov nad Kněžnou, Pelhřimov, and others maintain unemployment rates below 3 percent. Currently, there are approximately 3.2 job seekers per vacancy nationwide, with significant regional variations – Karviná district faces the most challenging situation with 21.8 applicants competing for each available position.
