Castle Blatna: A Fairytale Just One Hour From Prague

Castle Blatna is a historic castle located in the town of Blatna in the Czech Republic. It’s one of the country’s best-preserved “water castles” and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region, attracting visitors from all over the world. If you’re looking for a little bit of fairytale magic after a long week, Castle Blatna is a great place to find it.

Castle History

Castle Blatna can be traced back to the 13th century, initially built as a Gothic fortress. However, it was not until the 19th century that the castle finally rendered its current form as a heady mix of Romanesque, Gothic, Romantic, and Renaissance architectural styles.

The castle has had many owners throughout the centuries, but Wenzel Karl Hildprandt of Ottenhausen, who bought the court in 1798, is the direct descendant of the current owners today. Following the fall of communism, the castle was restituted back to the Hildprandt family, who has maintained the property to the present day.

Castle Blatna Today

Today, Castle Blatna is open to the public and functions as a cultural and historic center, allowing visitors to explore the castle’s impressive interiors adorned with beautiful frescoes, antique furniture, and valuable art collections. The court also houses a museum dedicated to the history of the Hildprandt family, the town of Blatna, and the surrounding region.

In addition to its cultural and historical offerings, Castle Blatna is a popular venue for weddings, concerts, markets, tours, and other events regularly held throughout the year. The castle’s stunning English Park and courtyard provide a beautiful backdrop for outdoor functions, while the castle’s grand halls and ballrooms are perfect for more formal gatherings.

The English Park, in particular, is a hit with families. Home to a herd of fallow deer, peacocks, and Bella, Esmerelda, and Diego, the three resident alpacas, it’s a beautiful place to relax and have fun.

Come on Down!

The castle grounds, parks, and courtyards are open to the public all year round, typically from 10:00 to 17:00 every day. You can enjoy the beautiful surroundings and architecture and get refreshments at the very special Oh My Deer Café.

Guided tours of the castle’s interiors are subject to booking and are available from April to November. For some of the spectacular events at Castle Blatna, it’s always best to watch the castle’s website and Instagram channel.
