In a significant development for Prague’s transportation system, the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) has inaugurated a new tram line connecting Divoká Šárka to Dědina. The new line, with a length of 840 million Czech koruna ($39 million), is the longest extension of the city’s tram network in the past 20 years.
The newly constructed tram line traverses Prague 6, starting from the Divoká Šárka loop and passing through four newly built stops before reaching the Dědina terminus. This expansion aims to provide convenient transportation for residents of Dolní Liboc and the Na Dědině housing estate.
The project involved meticulous planning and coordination to ensure the seamless integration of the tram line into the existing urban infrastructure. The construction required extensive earthworks, with nearly 100,000 tons of soil excavated. Additionally, over 3.5 kilometers of new water and sewage pipes, 10 kilometers of power cables, and more than 15 kilometers of communication and optical cables were installed.
The inauguration of the Divoká Šárka-Dědina tram line marks a milestone achievement in Prague’s transportation development. The project was not without its challenges, as it involved working within the constraints of the city’s built-up area. However, the successful completion of this ambitious endeavor sets the stage for future expansions, including the planned tram line in the heart of Prague on Wenceslas Square.
With the introduction of the new tram line, daily tram services 20 and 26 have been extended to the Dědina terminus, providing an efficient connection for residents and commuters in the area. However, it is important to note that the night trams will not operate on this section. To compensate for this, the Prague Public Transit Company has provided night bus services to cater to passengers during the late hours.
The Dědina tram line is a transportation solution and a catalyst for urban development. The project has led to the revitalization of the surrounding areas, resulting in planting over 170 trees and constructing new infrastructure. Moreover, the Prague city administration plans to build a parking facility to accommodate local residents, ensuring convenient access to public transportation.
