This morning, a newborn baby was found in a waste container in one of Pardubice’s housing estates. His condition was critical, but now he is stable, according to police. The temperature dropped below freezing overnight, and the baby was severely hypothermic.
This morning, police said they had found and detained the baby’s mother. Criminal proceedings have been opened against her, but the legal qualification has not yet been determined, said regional police spokeswoman Markéta Janovská.
“Thanks to the quick and professional care of the doctor and paramedics of the ambulance service and, subsequently, the professional care of the doctors and paramedics of the Pardubice hospital, he was saved and should be in stable condition at the moment,” Janovská said.
Given the child’s age, the police will not provide any further information at this time. She is expected to give more details on Monday afternoon.
A baby box has been operating at the Pardubice hospital since 2008. So far, nine babies have been placed there.
