Johnny Depp and Michael Caine will come to the Karlovy Vary festival

The guests of this year’s Karlovy Vary festival will be Oscar and many other award winners, including American actor Johnny Depp and British actor Michael Caine. Jiří Bartoška, the president of the festival, said this at a press conference today. Among Czech filmmakers, the festival will honor director Jan Svěrák.

Svěrák will receive the Festival President’s Award and present his film The Ride, which won the Crystal Globe for Best Film at the 1995 festival. Another guest will be the artist Petr Sís, and the festival will present a film made about him by his brother David Sís.

The festival will take place from 20 to 28 August, after a hiatus last year caused by the pandemic of the covid-19 disease.

British actor, winner of two Oscars, the European Film Award, and more than 40 other awards, Sir Michael Caine will receive the Crystal Globe for his outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema at the opening ceremony of the festival.

The festival will screen the comedy-drama Best Sellers, the feature directorial debut of Lina Roessler, in which he portrays a crotchety aged writer embarking on his latest literary tour.

According to Bartoška, Johnny Depp will mainly present himself as a producer. From his growing filmography, the festival has selected two films that Depp has produced, the documentary Pot of Gold: A Few Drinks with Shane MacGowan (2020) and the drama Minamata (2020), in which he also played the lead role.
