In a significant leap towards digital transformation, O2 has announced the completion of the main phase of its mobile network modernization in the Czech Republic. The telecom giant now boasts an impressive 5G coverage, reaching 96% of the country’s population through 5,300 base stations. This milestone marks a pivotal moment in the Czech Republic’s journey towards comprehensive 5G connectivity.
The intensive 5G rollout, spanning four years, was a collaborative effort between O2, CETIN, and Ericsson. Together, they modernized thousands of transmitters, now covering 80% of the Czech territory. Jan Hruška, O2’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized that this is just the beginning, with plans to further develop the network. By the end of 2024, O2 aims to be the first operator in the Czech Republic to gradually make the 900 MHz frequency available for fast data.
Despite the widespread availability of 5G, a significant challenge remains: device compatibility. A surprising 70% of O2 customers still use phones that don’t support 5G technology. This gap between infrastructure and user equipment presents a unique paradox in today’s digital age, as highlighted by Jan Kelča, Technical Director of OR-CZ.
To bridge this divide, O2 is launching a proactive campaign. Starting November 1st, the operator will display information about 5G compatibility directly on customers’ phone screens. Devices will show “CHCI5G” (I WANT 5G) for 4G phones and “MAM5G” (I HAVE 5G) for 5G-capable devices. This initiative aims to increase awareness and drive adoption of 5G-compatible devices.
As the holiday season approaches, O2 is gearing up with a Christmas campaign focused on equipping customers with 5G phones. The operator will offer 5G devices, including iPhones, on installment plans without interest, along with trade-in bonuses for old phones. Additionally, every O2 customer will receive three vouchers for purchasing original O2 accessories.
