Strong storms are expected to continue over the Czech Republic until Saturday, according to a warning issued by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) on Friday. Due to heavy downpours, there is a risk of small streams flooding and localized floods from 6 PM on Friday until noon on Saturday.
Meteorologists have warned that very strong storms are expected, accompanied by intense rainfall with totals around 50 mm, and in repeated storms, even around 80 mm. Wind gusts could reach speeds of around 25 m/s (90 km/h), and hailstones may be as large as 3 cm in diameter.
The warning for severe storms is in effect for the entire Czech Republic from 2 PM on Friday until 2 AM on Saturday. Additionally, parts of the South Moravian and Zlín Regions will experience high temperatures exceeding 31 degrees Celsius until 6 PM.
The CHMI has also warned of possible flooding due to the heavy rainfall. “Due to the high saturation of the area, there may be local flooding or even flash floods. Localized intense rain with possible rapid water runoff from slopes, quick flooding of small streams and dry riverbeds, flooding of underpasses and basements, undermining of roads, or clogging with carried material is expected. Given the saturated basin from previous rainfall, flash floods are likely in the orographically diverse terrain,” added meteorologists.
Winds may also uproot trees and cause property damage. A low flood alert is in effect from 6 PM on Friday until noon on Saturday for the districts of Jindřichův Hradec, Kaplice, Soběslav, Trhové Sviny, and Třeboň in the South Bohemian Region and practically the entire Hradec Králové Region.
The Czech Republic has been experiencing severe storms for several days now. For example, on Thursday, heavy rain caused issues in the Pardubice Region, where firefighters dealt with over a hundred rain-related cases. Thousands of households were left without electricity.
