As the crisp autumn air gives way to winter’s chill, parts of the Czech Republic have experienced their first snowfall of the season. Meteorologists’ predictions came true on Wednesday as snowflakes began to dance through the air, not just in the mountainous regions but also in lower-lying areas.
The picturesque Krkonoše and Ore Mountains were among the first to don their winter coats, with the Brdy highlands joining in the snowy spectacle. Web cameras operated by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute captured the magical transformation, showing snow-covered landscapes in mountain resorts and even in unexpected locations like Jizerka, Klínovec, and Rožmitál pod Třemšínem.
While lowland areas saw a mix of rain and snow, with flakes melting upon contact with the ground, higher elevations told a different story. In regions above 1,000 meters, temperatures dipped below freezing, allowing for more substantial accumulation. The Krkonoše mountains, in particular, reported an impressive four centimeters of snow by Wednesday afternoon.
For many in the lowlands, the snow’s appearance was fleeting but magical. Chilled surfaces like car hoods briefly held onto the delicate flakes, offering a tantalizing glimpse of winter before the snow succumbed to above-freezing temperatures.
As night falls, the meteorological drama is set to continue. Precipitation, including snow, is expected to persist into Thursday. However, as the day progresses, snowfall is likely to retreat to higher elevations, leaving lower regions to anticipate winter’s full arrival in the weeks to come.
