D5 mass accident: up to 40 cars collided, causing the highway to close completely

Rescuers intervene on the D5 motorway in a mass accident. According to initial information, ten trucks and 15 cars collided. Police now say up to forty vehicles. The ambulance service reported at least four injured. Police closed both directions of the motorway due to the landing of a rescue helicopter.

“The crashed vehicles are scattered over about a 150-meter stretch of the highway. We are diverting traffic at exit 37, diversion route – road. II/605, exit Žebrák, Zdice,” police said on Twitter around midday.

“Fire brigade units of the Beroun and Hořovice fire brigades and the fire brigades of Komárov and Zdice went to the scene. At the same time, firefighters from the Pilsen region were asked to cooperate. According to initial information, there was a collision of about 10 trucks and 15 cars,” the firefighters reported on Twitter.

Petra Homolová, a spokeswoman for the Central Bohemian Rescue Service, said that her colleagues have so far reported five injured people who had to be rescued by firefighters from the wrecked vehicles. She later clarified that there were supposed to be four injured.

An ambulance helicopter was still at the scene around midday, and two people were taken to hospital by paramedics with moderate injuries.
