The reason for the amendment was a petition by 120 000 people in response to the European Commission’s efforts to restrict gun ownership among the people.
A new item will be added to the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms, which is part of the constitution, stating that “the right to protect one’s own life or the life of another person, including with the use of a weapon, is guaranteed under the conditions provided by the law.” It goes into effect on September 1st.
According to the law’s authors, this constitutional reform will prevent this right from being limited by common law, bolstering the Czech Republic’s position in discussions about future EU laws.
